The History of PlayStation®
A lot has happened since last year’s E3. PlayStation launched the PlayStation®Move motion controller, which by this point has made its way into the living rooms of over eight million homes worldwide. Gran Turismo®5 and Killzone®3 – among others - were released to the masses, and in September 2010 PlayStation celebrated its 15th anniversary.
Looking back at our beginning in 1995, it’s extraordinary to see all that has been done over the past 15 years: three consoles, three portable gaming platforms, literally thousands of games, and millions of devoted fans.
Take a walk down memory lane with us and check out what PlayStation has accomplished since launching the original PlayStation in North America on
September 9, 1995.

Since we are touching on milestones it’s important, and a sense of pride, for us to point out that SCEA has been a part of E3 since the very beginning. Each year we attend the show with as much excitement as the gaming community who listens intently for all the new releases and announcements. It has been our commitment to the gaming industry to deliver innovative products, games and experiences to our consumers, and this year is no different.
We have worked hard to make PlayStation the premier brand for stereoscopic 3D gaming and entertainment, and continue to deliver on that promise. The list of game titles, movies and content available in 3D continues to grow. And the experience that goes along with 3D on the PS3™ system remains unmatched as the most immersive gaming experience there is today.
While there were plenty of exciting things announced at this year’s E3, let’s take a look back at the highlights from years’ past, starting way back in ’95:
