Four Time MVP and Homerun King Barry Bonds Stars as Cover Athlete for the PlayStation Game Console’s Only Major League Baseball Game

LOS ANGELES, May 21, 2002 –
Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. announced today that MLB™ 2003 from the 989 Sports® development team will take the field in July of 2002. Now in its seventh season, the latest installment of the most popular baseball franchise on PlayStation® is poised to be this year’s selection for MVP as it features all-new graphics, stadiums, rosters, stats and unmatched gameplay. Coupling professionally consulted Artificial Intelligence (AI) from dozens of professional players and coaches with Player, Manager and General Manager (GM) modes of gameplay, MLB 2003 is the only choice for hard core baseball fans and casual gamers alike as they look to put their names in the record books by winning official MLB trophies including the Gold Glove, Cy Young, MVP and ultimate prize of the World Series™ championship.

Incorporating consultation from some of the biggest names in professional baseball including batting champion Tony Gwynn and pitching sensation Trevor Hoffman, MLB 2003 will feature 10-time Major League Baseball All-Star and future Hall of Famer Barry Bonds as the cover athlete. In arguably the greatest offensive season in Major League Baseball history, last year the NL MVP became the single season homerun king as he set marks for homeruns (73), slugging percentage (.863) and walks (177). The Sporting News "Player of the Decade" for the ’90s, Barry Bonds represents the explosive power and tradition of excellence embodied in 989 Sports’ MLB 2003.

"The MLB franchise has long been the most popular baseball game available for PlayStation, and MLB 2003 is set to be the best version yet," said Kelly Ryan, director, sports product development, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. "Featuring new graphics for players and stadiums and extraordinary gameplay, the 989 Sports team has developed a game that is a must-have for every PlayStation baseball fan."

Featuring a TV-style presentation with updated conversational commentary from the two-man booth of Hall of Famer Vin Scully and sportscaster Dave Campbell, MLB 2003 will keep everyone on the edge of their seat as the action unfolds through dozens of camera angles. With Total Control Pitching, Fielding and Hitting, the diving catches, throws from the knees and legendary offensive fire power are unequaled, as updated gameplay allows for players to test their baseball savvy and play like the pros through eight modes of gameplay, be it a quick game in Exhibition mode, the rigors of 162 games in Season mode or a shot at the prize in World Series mode.
